Why would Ukraine really most likely join NATO and deploy American military bases on its territory?
Because Ukraine does not consider itself safe next to such a large and aggressive state as Russia. And Ukraine has every reason to do this. As soon as in 2014 the people of Ukraine tried to show their independence and elect a non-pro-Russian president, and as soon as the majority of the population of Ukraine showed their commitment to the Western path of development, this caused a negative reaction from Russia, which, in the end, led to Russia’s seizure of Crimea and provoking the eastern regions of Ukraine to separatism and their further support.
Why does Russia believe that Ukraine has no right to join NATO?
In accordance with the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 between Ukraine, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, Ukraine voluntarily renounced nuclear weapons. In response, the remaining nuclear Powers pledged to refrain from the use of force and the threat of its use against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine. The signatories of the Memorandum did not undertake any other obligations. However, Russian President Putin claims that Western countries have made verbal promises to Russia not to promote the presence of the NATO bloc further to the East. Although there is no confirmation of such an assertion anywhere.
Why does Ukraine have the right to join NATO?
Because there is no ban on its joining NATO provided by any international agreement. Ukraine is a sovereign state that has the right to independently decide which military, economic and other organizations it should join. The argument that Ukraine’s accession to NATO and the deployment of NATO military bases on its territory poses a threat to the interests of neighboring Russia does not stand up to any criticism, since the interests and fears of neighboring countries cannot restrict the freedom of a sovereign state.
