In the patriarchal Kazakh society, women have traditionally been the keepers of the home. Everything related to the household was considered their responsibility, which was fair since women didn’t work and spent their entire day managing the home, while men earned money.
However, later on, women began striving for equality and started working outside the home. Despite this, the stereotype that household duties fall on women has persisted. As a result, in modern families, women often bear a double burden, combining work with household responsibilities. I believe this is wrong, and it needs to be addressed. We need to change public opinion and promote the idea that if both spouses work, they should share household chores equally.
Another factor influencing this situation is the difference in salaries. Men in our society often earn more than women. Therefore, they consider their work more valuable and important, believing they have the right not to engage in household chores. This situation also needs to be challenged. We need to instill the idea in the public consciousness that, for example, childcare is not exclusively a woman’s responsibility. Men can and should take parental leave, rush from work to pick up children from daycare or extracurricular activities, etc. This way, men will lose their superiority over women in the eyes of employers, and women will be paid the same as men.
Without these deep changes in public consciousness, we cannot achieve equality between women and men.
